Starting from the ground up...it is the only way to go.
Gound work
Ground work consists of different categories from mucking stalls and pasture cleaning to lunging a horse in perfect form and collection. The we also have grooming to first aid.
Ground work is essential to a solid understanding of the horse's body language. By learning a horse's body language you become an able reader of the horse's conscience making him a more predictable animal and a safer one as well. It also teaches you to communicate your intentions toward him with ease. Most important you learn to use the horse's body language to your advantage.
We can't forget the humble job of grooming and hoof maintenance. Grooming and hoof maintenance is virtually the only way you will ever notice injuries and even sometimes illness.

I
n the saddle is a good place to be but if you want to really learn to feel the horse's movements then bare-back is the best way to start. Just like on the ground all of the horse's actions go through his muscles and have a chain reaction going through your muscles. Being the creature of habit we are as humans we become accustomed to the different reactions a horse will have in different situation and learn to predict with your eyes closed what is going to happen next
Now you are ready for the saddle!

Saddle Up
If you are ready to use it you had better be ready to maintain it. Saddles and tack don't come cheap and the best way to keep it in good condition is to clean it and condition it regularly. Neglected leather becomes cracked and brittle making it unsafe to use for riding.
